3 ways I use coconut oil

I have three jars of coconut oil in my house.

coconut oil-1One sits in the bathroom. I use it as a night cream.
One sits next to the oven. I use it for frying and cooking.
One sits next to the fridge. I use it for oil pulling.

I could say, coconut oil has become the new duct tape for me. Hmm. Maybe not quite like the 101 duct tape crafts… I don’t even own duct tape, not sure if the analogy works (note to self: ask a guy friend or a very artsy friend). Moving on…

I caught on to coconut oil about a year ago as I was searching for a healthier life style with healthier alternatives to all the toxins we consum. Ever since I made three changes in my life:

Coconut oil for cooking and frying
I have been experimenting with a number of different oils, rapeseed oil, grapeseed oil, sesame oil. For me all of them changed the taste of the food somewhat. First, I didn’t give coconut oil a chance. I didn’t think I wanted my turkey chili with a coconut flavor after all. But then I tried it with a “what the heck”-attitude and what did I find? The food never took on the coconut flavor. My switch to coconut oil was complete!

Coconut oil as a skin moisturizer
I was skeptical. So I decided to give it a try for one month last year. I just ran out of my Clinique creams anyway, so “what the heck”. Coconut oil feels good on the skin, but the skin doesn’t absorb it fast. You need to apply it to your skin a while before you go to bed if you use it as a night cream. I never tried make-up on top, so can’t give advice, but I guess you need to let it absorb first. I ended up using coconut oil as a moisturizer for 4 or 5 months last year, but I did see wrinkles form after a while (wherever they came from, I didn’t like it!). In the end I went back to Macy’s to get Clinique and now I use coconut oil on alternate evenings only.

Coconut oil for oil pulling
I read a lot about oil pulling, but couldn’t find a proven benefit, but also found nothing that said, it’s bad for you. So, “what the heck”, I gave it a try. One of the benefits that I read about was cleaner and whiter teeth. I was about to get Crest White Strips, when I thought, hang on, let’s try this for10 days and see if it works. I have been oil pulling for about 3 weeks now and my teeth have become whiter. They feel cleaner and my breath gels fresher. Another win for coconut oil.

Two (and a bit) out of three isn’t bad. Coconut oil will remain a staple in my household.

Are you using coconut oil? If so, what for?

    1. Homemade coconut oil sounds awesome. I wouldn’t even know how to do it. Maybe you should post the recipe? 🙂
