Living in the desert I sometimes forget how soothing the sound of water is.
They both listened silently to the water, which to them was not just water, but the voice of life, the voice of Being, the voice of perpetual Becoming.
Hermann Hesse
Natural sounds and green environments have been linked to relaxation and well-being for hundreds of years. And research has shown that a walk in nature can affect the heart rate. Our brain considers the sound of running water or rustling leaves as a non-threat and soothing, which is why it has a calming effect.
Today, on my way back from the farmer’s market I decided to stop at the sculpture garden at the Palm Desert Art Museum and just listened to the water flowing for a few minutes. Calm.
The Palm Desert Art Museum is currently closed, but the Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden is open to the public.
